Downsizing: The Estate Sale

If you are considering really downsizing and selling a lot of your belongings, an estate sale is the way to go!  Most people think estate sales are only held after a person has passed away and the family needs to liquidate all of their belongings.  However, estate sales are also held for downsizing, retirement, relocation, and many other reasons.  According to www.estatesalesguide.com, an estate sale happens when the majority of the items in a home must be sold in a timely manner and at the highest value possible.  Since were getting ready to live and travel in our RV,  we had a lot of things to sell!

We had held several garage sales over the last year to work on downsizing our belongings, but they were a lot of work and took a lot of time.   Besides doing all that work, it seems that garage sale customers are perpetual low-ballers on price.  I could have an item that was brand new with a $40 tag on it and they would offer $5.  I know it’s a garage sale, but I didn’t want to just give it all away!  It was much easier to hire a professional estate sale company to handle the details for us.  Experienced estate sales companies have the expertise and workers to handle all of your items, as well as a large following of buyers that attend their sales.  Yes, they charge a percentage fee, but your overall sales are much higher with their services.  They research the value of items and know the going market rate for many resale products.

In the weeks leading up to the sale of our house, we had so many things going on that it was a relief to be able to let the estate sale company take over this area.  All we had to do was remove the items we wanted to keep and they did the rest.  They take things out of cabinets, clean anything needed, price and organize, and stage the house in a logical and attractive way.  And when they are done, anything left that you don’t want is donated and taken away for you!  We used Kaleidoscope Estate Sales in San Angelo, Texas, and they did a fabulous job on our sale.  Ben Hays and his entire crew are true professionals and we highly recommend them!

While many people don’t sell most of their belongings, we decided that it would be the right choice for us.  The cost of a large storage unit to keep a whole houseful of things in can get pretty expensive.  A lot of our furniture was older, so we calculated that it would be more cost effective to purchase new furniture when we finished traveling.  We kept our kitchen items, family photos and memorabilia, favorite wall pictures and decorations, some clothing, and holiday decorations.  Because we kept only a small percentage of our belongings,  we were able to get a small storage unit for a much lower price.

Ready to hit the road!
