Wisconsin Dells: Wonders, Wildlife, and Wow Moments!

Our Wisconsin Dells anniversary getaway offered the perfect mix for the two of us—from winding sandstone canyons and quiet kayaking to dazzling magic shows, up-close wildlife encounters, and classic Wisconsin traditions. Every day brought a new adventure, and the variety kept us on the move from start to finish.

We discovered natural wonders, explored quirky attractions, enjoyed local traditions, and celebrated another year together along the way. Here are the highlights of our Wisconsin adventure.

We have arrived!

Into the Dells

We started by exploring the landscape that made the Dells famous. At Lost Canyon, we traveled by horse-drawn wagon through a narrow sandstone gorge shaped by centuries of water and erosion. Towering rock walls, unusual formations, and wooded surroundings created the feeling of entering a hidden world. It was a fascinating introduction to the area’s distinctive geology.

A Night of Magic

The Rick Wilcox Magic Theater brought an evening of surprises and laughter to our getaway. The intimate theater featured an entertaining mix of grand illusions, sleight of hand, comedy, and audience participation. One trick after another left us wondering how it was possible. It was an evening of clever illusions and good old-fashioned fun.

No photos allowed during the show, but we had a great time.

An Anniversary Celebration on the Water

A sunset dinner cruise was one of the highlights of our anniversary celebration. As the sun dipped toward the horizon, the changing colors over the river provided a lovely backdrop for our evening together.

As promised...a beautiful sunset!

Our river cruise included two classic Dells attractions. One highlight was “Leaping the Chasm” at Stand Rock, where a trained dog makes an incredible leap across a five-foot gap from the main cliff to a ledge atop a towering 47-foot sandstone rock formation. This daring feat dates back to the 1890s and has captivated visitors for generations. Seeing a dog make that seemingly impossible jump was quite a sight.

We also experienced Witches Gulch, where a boardwalk winds through a narrow, moss-covered sandstone passage illuminated by torchlight. The flickering flames cast shadows across the rugged rock walls, creating an almost otherworldly setting. Combining these unique attractions with a sunset cruise made for a memorable anniversary evening.

Supper Club Tradition and Mirror Lake

No Wisconsin getaway would be complete without a traditional supper club, and Ishnala Supper Club delivered on both atmosphere and setting. Perched above Mirror Lake, this iconic restaurant combines rustic charm, wooded views, and classic Wisconsin hospitality. The surroundings were as much a part of the evening as the meal itself.

Nearby, Mirror Lake State Park offered a quieter side of Wisconsin. Sandstone cliffs and wooded hills framed the calm water, making it an inviting place to unwind. We took to the lake in our kayaks, enjoying a different perspective of the shoreline and the peaceful scenery reflected on the water.

Up Close and Personal with the Animals

Our visit to Timbavati Wildlife Park added a wildlife adventure to the itinerary, with the giraffe encounter stealing the show. We enjoyed a private VIP tour before the park opened to other guests, giving us an opportunity to interact with the animals in a more personal setting.

This boy was so sweet and curious.
I could have spent the whole tour right here.

Hand-feeding them was a highlight, especially getting so close to these fascinating creatures. It was a fun departure from our outdoor excursions and sightseeing, and certainly a day with some memorable photo opportunities.

Lights, Music, and Magic in the Forest

At Aquavia Lumina, an ordinary walk through the wooded canyon became an immersive nighttime adventure. The trail came alive with glowing colors, music, sound effects, and imaginative storytelling.

As we followed the path through the darkness, illuminated scenes appeared among the trees and along the walkways. Each turn revealed something new, creating the illusion that the forest was telling its own story. The combination of shadowy woods and vibrant displays was mesmerizing, and we found ourselves pausing to appreciate the details.  It was a creative blend of nature and technology that brought a little enchantment to the evening.

The Wonderful Weirdness of the House on the Rock

Our day trip to The House on the Rock was filled with surprises. What began in the 1940s as Alex Jordan Jr.’s retreat atop Deer Shelter Rock eventually grew into an extraordinary complex of themed rooms, mechanical displays, and eclectic collections. The 200-acre attraction is organized into 3 sections: the original house and infinity room; the streets of yesterday and carousels; and the circus, galleries, and gardens.

Thousands of glass panels line the infinity room as you walk to the far edge.

The sheer variety was astonishing. Around every corner, another unusual exhibit seemed to be waiting, making it difficult to know what to look at next. The standout was the spectacular Carousel Room, filled with elaborate decorations, dazzling lights, and theatrical details.

Quirky, extravagant, and unlike anything else on our itinerary, the House on the Rock was a feast for the eyes. It’s one of those places that really must be seen to be believed.

Hiking High at Devil’s Lake

At Devil’s Lake State Park, we traded indoor attractions for rugged trails and sweeping views. The wooded paths and dramatic quartzite bluffs offered some of the trip’s most impressive scenery.

Balanced Rock
Devil's Doorway

We tackled the East Bluff Trail, navigating steep climbs and uneven stone steps along the way. It was quite a workout, but the views from above made the effort worthwhile. We also stopped at two of the park’s well-known natural landmarks: Devil’s Doorway and Balanced Rock.

The combination of rugged rock formations, forested hills, and expansive views made this hike a standout for anyone who enjoys getting outdoors and earning their scenery.

Some areas of the trail were quite challenging.

Another Adventure in the Books

Looking back, it’s hard to pick just one favorite from our Wisconsin Dells getaway. What tied it all together was the chance to share so many different adventures. Whether we were climbing a trail, floating across the lake, or laughing at a magic trick, we were making new memories together.

Another anniversary celebrated, another adventure in the books, and plenty of reasons to keep exploring. ❤️
