Personalizing Our New RV

Even if you live in an RV, you will want to personalized your living space.  While an Entegra luxury motor home comes with pretty much everything you need, we still wanted to make it feel like home to us. During our month in Florida we were able to spend some time getting everything moved in and organized in our new coach.  Here are some things we did in each area inside the coach:

Kitchen:

When you live in a small space, having everything organized in the kitchen cabinets makes life a little easier.  In an RV we also must remember what we have access to during travel when our slides are not out.   I decided to put the main dishes we use in the cabinet over the sink and some snack items in the tall cabinet where we can get to them all the time–even while traveling.   In this coach, we will use the hutch for more pantry storage as well as bigger kitchenware items that we don’t need during travel.  I highly recommend Magma induction cookware as a space saving option—the  7 or 10 piece nesting sets take up less than 1/2 cubic foot of space.

We added an additional shelf for the hutch and put up  decorative window film  to make it pretty.

Another thing to consider is that things move around when you are driving.  I bought  spice jar holders for my large shallow drawer, which really helps them to stay in place.  My husband also made plexiglass barriers for the pantry shelves, so things don’t fall out when you open the cabinet doors.  We used to use small tension rods across the front, but I like this better and it’s a more permanent fix.  The  hanging wine glass holder in the hutch saves space and keeps the glasses from rolling into each other.  I liked that it didn’t require screws or drilling holes.

Living Area:

Hanging pictures on the wall always makes a place feel like home to me.  That was one of the first things we did after every move during our military years.  We use command strips to keep our pictures on the wall since we don’t have anything too heavy in the coach.  They are easy to remove if needed and don’t mess up the walls.

I also like to have some decorations sitting out but got tired of packing them up each time we traveled.  We found that Quake Hold putty will keep items secured to the counters even while we are driving.  Problem solved and now the coach looks pretty all the time!

Our entry table in the front of the coach also makes it feel homier.  Of course, we can’t leave that up when driving or we couldn’t use the steering wheel!  But after parking, we set up the steering wheel and put the board on top.  I use a table cloth which looks nice but also does double duty to hide our shoes underneath.  In Texas, I had a pretty table top done that is made from a wine barrel top.  Thanks Steve at The Barrel King –I love the way it looks!

And we couldn’t leave out our canine traveling companions, Sammie and Chloe.  They have their memory foam dog beds in a prominent position in the living room so they can be a part of everything. The extra cushioning really helps with their arthritis.  Our Texas pillows round out the living room look.

Who doesn’t love a good game night?   We have storage under the dinette and by the couch for games that we have learned and enjoyed playing with new friends at different campgrounds along our way.  Several of our favorites so far are Quirkle , Rummikub , Racko , Sequence , and Mexican Train Dominoes.  If you haven’t tried them, they are fun and easy to learn either at home or during travel!

Bathroom:

We are using a great wall mounted shampoo dispenser.   It keeps bottles out of the shower and works well.  We also had to find a place for our dirty clothes hamper.  I didn’t want it in the closet with our clean clothes and there wasn’t really any good place sitting out, so we decided on a hook in the bathroom.  I like the look of this cloth clothes hamper and it doesn’t take up too much space.  We also keep the Swiffer mop here with a small hook to hold it upright.

Bedroom:

I love the canvas storage baskets on the top shelf to keep things together and organized.  Shoe racks wood shoe racks also helped us to double our storage space in the bottom of the closet.  We split them so that I have two racks on my side of the closet and Mike has one (that’s how it should be,right?).  I found that standard sheets did not fit our motor home mattress as well as I would like—the mattress is a few inches shorter in the width and the fitted sheet wouldn’t stay tight.  I ordered a special RV bed sheet set and it fits so much better!

So that’s all we’ve done so far to the inside—what do you think?  If you have other helpful decoration or organization tips, I would love to hear from you!

Great Looking and I love the idea of the hamper and the cover for the steering wheel. Keeping those ideas in my mind, and the glue! Travel Safe.
