Ozark Mountains, Arkansas

The Ozark Mountains are full of spectacular beauty!  I am more familiar with mountain ranges on the east and west coasts of the US, but forget that there are some impressive areas right in the middle of the country.  Stunning views, clear rivers and lakes, and rugged beauty can be found just about anywhere you look in the Ozarks.

On Saturday, September 15th we arrived in Ponca, Arkansas in the Ozark Mountains.  We had to navigate some steep and winding roads (hey, what’s a little screaming) on the way up the mountain, but when we arrived at the Buffalo Outdoor Center Campground it was worth the drive.   From San Antonio we took I-30 up to Little Rock, Arkansas then I-40 to Lamar and finally Arkansas Route 21 up to Ponca.

The RV campsites are up at the top of the hill past the camp store.  The view over the valley below from our motor home is gorgeous.  In the mornings you can see the fog rising as the sun comes up.  Since it is September, the camp area is not crowded at all.

There is a lot to do in this area of the Ozarks:  hiking, biking, fishing, canoeing, and zip lining to name a few.  Although a little pricey, we had a great time doing the one mile canopy tour zip line.  It was our first time zip lining, and the views were awesome over the 8 sections of the tour.

We drove 30 minutes to the neighboring town of Jasper to have lunch at the Cliff House restaurant which overlooks the Grand Canyon of the Ozarks.  The meal was wonderful and the views were incredible as you look out over the deepest canyon in the Ozarks.

One more state added to our map-Arkansas!
