Boonville, Missouri

On Thursday, September 20th we left Arkansas and headed north to Missouri.  We took Route 65 north and then I-70 to Boonville.  We stayed at Katy Roundhouse Campground, which was a little more rustic than some others we’ve been to.  It was a quiet wooded area that was right along the Katy Trail.  We started feeling some cooler fall temperatures on this leg of our journey– we actually put on a jacket in the mornings!

The Katy Trail is a 237 mile trail stretching across most of the state of Missouri–over half of the trail follows the Lewis and Clark path up the Missouri River.  It is America’s longest “rails to trails” project and is mostly flat and scenic, which is perfect for biking and hiking.  We enjoyed the scenery of the trail very much.  One note to self:  if you are crossing a narrow bridge pathway and a biker is coming toward you and swerving all over, just stop instead of trying to scoot over to the edge by the concrete wall to let them by.  lol  That’s how I took my first spill on our new bikes.  Luckily just some abrasions and bruises on me and some scratches on my bike–could have been worse.

The other big reason for choosing Boonville, was our scheduled tour to see the Clydesdales at Warm Springs Ranch.  Our friend, Becky, told us about this place and it did not disappoint!  We opted for the more expensive VIP tour over the standard group tour and it was SO COOL!  We were met at the gate and escorted to a front row parking spot right at the door.

We had a private tour guide and were able to visit up close and personally with horses throughout the 300 acre facility.  We rode out into the fields on a large tractor-pulled wagon.  The horses come right up to visit as soon as you stop!  We had an hour in the fields with the yearlings, two year olds, and mama horses.  This location is the breeding facility, so the Clydesdale team horses are not kept here.

After our tour in the fields, we came into the barn area.  We were impressed that the stable area was so clean and well-kept.  We were so lucky to also see a one week old foal!

Inside you can take a picture with Jed and also get a free beer.  You do need reservations for all tours, so if  you plan to go you can book a tour online.

The town of Boonville is rather small, only about 8500 people, but it has a quaint little downtown area and a nice Visitor’s Center.  The Isle of Capri casino is also there along the river.  We had a fun evening of throwing away our money….er gambling….and a nice dinner in the casino restaurant.  If you love biking trails or horses, I would definitely recommend a visit to Boonville.

One more state added to our map--Missouri!

Beautiful drives and scenery. I think what’s really nice is you are getting to stop and enjoy these places not just driving through. I love the Clydesdales, how special you got to get up close to them. Great RVing!

  3. What a great adventure this was for you! It looks like so much fun. And oh…those Clydesdales are breathtaking.
