Oklahoma City, OK

On Thursday, Nov 15th, we headed east on I-40 to Oklahoma City.  We stayed at a very nice campground called Twin Fountains RV Resort, which had some great amenities and was an easy drive to many attractions.

We didn’t realize that Oklahoma City had a little riverwalk type area in Bricktown.  We enjoyed an afternoon riding the water taxi, playing putt putt golf, and eating at Toby Keith’s restaurant, “I Love this Bar & Grill.”  And no Carly,  once I discovered what calf fries were, there was NO WAY I was eating those!  lol

The Centennial Land Run monument is a really cool 47-statue depiction of when 50,000 people rushed to Oklahoma Territory in 1889 to stake their claim on land (think Far and Away movie).

We also visited the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, which honors the victims, survivors, rescuers, and all affected by the Oklahoma City bombing on April 19, 1995.  You can’t leave there without being affected by this very well done memorial.  The twin gates frame the moment of destruction (9:02 am):  the east gate shows 9:01 representing innocence before the attack and the west gate shows 9:03 when lives were changed forever.  The reflecting pool’s gently flowing water is to help soothe wounds and provide a peaceful setting for quiet thoughts.  Empty chairs represent the 168 people who were killed that day.

On a lighter note, we were just in time for the opening of the Holiday Lights Spectacular in Midwest City.  It’s a similar display to our Holiday Light Tour in San Angelo and helped us to start feeling that Christmas spirit.   Although we just missed seeing our friends, the Singers, we did get to have dinner with our very musically talented niece, Brianna.  🙂

We added Oklahoma to our state map!

That’s so neat they also have a river walk in OK, I love the one in Venice, San Antonio, and San Angelo. I think that is such a moving idea to have the empty chair for each person killed in the bombing there.
